Reading Vere Hodgson’s Few Eggs and No Oranges last night for Persephone Reading Weekend, I was struck by a comment she made in one of her entries:
Sunday 22nd…Guns are working away outside. Observer is very emphatic for us to watch for invasion this Christmas.
My inner-geek squeed. Someone at the Observer had a friend in Torchwood.
Ahem. Back with something more substantial to say about the book shortly.

Ahem, indeed! Hee.
Hope you enjoy it and thank you for joining us for Persephone Reading Weekend, Kate.
Claire – I couldn’t resist.
Thank you, and Verity, for hosting such a lovely, companionable weekend.
I am so glad you are reading this, Kate! It was a riveting read from beginning to end and I got so much more from it than I was expecting. Enjoy, you big geek, you!

LOL! Hope you’re enjoying it. I found I had to dip in and out, but learnt so much.
Ramblingfancy – I really did enjoy the book. I suspect reading it all in one hurried weekend was probably why my reaction was so immediate. Years of war all in one fell swoop!
This title was my first Persephone purchase, so glad that other people have also read and enjoyed it.
Geraldine – It was a really interesting book, and I’m glad I stuck with it, in spite of the size!
I’m reading Few Eggs, too! A chunkster, but I’ve been in the mood for those lately.
Waiting to hear the final review.
I’m with Mystica – I picked the book up but wasn’t ready to commit. Look forward to know whether you’d recommend (and/or who to and why)…
Rose – I would definitely recommend. I’ve posted again with a proper review, but I think books like that bring home the war in a way that textbooks or even really well-written anthologies can never do.
